I just gave a talk at the free2feed breastfeeding/parenting support group in St. George and was asked about my favorite parenting books. I have a love/hate relationship with parenting books because I see parenting as a more organic and individualized process where simple “how-to” lists don’t seem to apply. That being said, there are a few parenting books that have significantly impacted me and affected how I parent. There are many others that have contained some nugget that has also been useful. Creating a Village
I find myself standing at the fence in our very individualistic society looking over at a better way–the way of the village. How would it be if all mothers, sisters, and daughters felt a part of a supportive community of women? It has been my African friends that have most helped me envision the possibility of it. One friend from Eritrea came to teach me how to put henna in my hair. Why “faithful nurturing”?
FAITHFUL A few years ago I ran across an old book entitled “Precious Bible Promises” by an 18th century English pastor named Samuel Clark. Through his study of the bible, he compiled a list of promises God has made to those who live faithfully. His scholarship inspired me–I was reminded how careful scripture study uncovers gems for daily living. I scanned through his list and added a few from my own reading of the bible and other faith literature.
